STL Engineering wins TOP 10 CANADA DEFENSE TECHNOLOGY PROVIDER 2022

December 2022

We’re excited to announce STL Engineering has been named among the ‘Top 10 Canada and Defense Technology Providers in 2022’. It is an honor to be featured in upcoming annual special edition on Canada Defense Tech. Winning this coveted recognition will enhance our reach and offerings to companies across North America.

Based on the nominations received from subscribers of Aerospace and Defense Review Magazine, STL Engineering was selected to be a part of a multilayered selection process.

The final listing is decided by our advisory panel for Defense Technology, consisting of Chief Scientists, Head of Design & Development Engineering,  Military and Government Officers, Data Scientists, Military and Government Officers, Industry Project Managers, Division Chiefs, Department of Defense personnel, Chairman, Managing Directors, Technical Directors, Head of Design & Development Engineering, and members of Defense & Aerospace Review editorial board.

Furthermore, STL Engineering was selected by a senior editor to be featured on the cover of the magazine after first interview with Aerospace & Defense Review. We were very happy to hear of this exciting development and grateful to the editorial team. Most importantly, we’re very happy to be able to share our way of business and success to other businesses in hopes to improve product development contractor experience by achieving technological advancements through peer-to-peer support, seamless integration, highest level of communication, respect and professionalism. At STL, we are setting a new standard in how businesses and staff interact and work with clients every day.

SEMI-THERM Thermal Technologies Workshop

November 2022

Representatives of STL Engineering were pleased to attend Semi-Therm Thermal Technologies Workshop this year in Redmond, WA. As specialists in thermal analysis and design, they were excited to be part of the conversation around the future of electronics cooling and to learn more about the trends in the industry. Below is a discussion on a few topics that were of particular interest.

The development of thermal models for CCAs and electronics requires component detail for greater accuracy. Variable power density on the die surface, or with multiple dies within the same package, is increasingly common and important and requires different modeling strategies in place of a typical 2-resistor component model. Semi-Therm had some very interesting presentations on this topic that will be beneficial in future projects.

STL Engineering is always on the lookout for the latest and greatest in thermal interface materials. This year’s thermal technologies workshop had a host of presentations on using metal as a thermal interface material. Liquid metal TIMs, which offer exceptional thermal conductivity, can be used in thin bond line applications. There was also some interesting information on solid-solid metal phase change materials which use a change in crystalline structure to store energy. With such high thermal conductivity compared to conventional TIMs, metal seems to be the future for thermal materials.

Much of the presentations focused on both pumped and passive liquid cooling, in single and two-phase configurations. These talks spanned from heat pipes to immersion cooling, to cold plate design and pump selection. At STL, much of our work involves passive and active air cooling for rugged environments, and occasionally passive 2-phase liquid cooling (i.e. heat pipes and vapor chambers). As power dissipations continue to rise, the Defense & Aerospace industry is already seeing a shift towards liquid cooling to ensure performance at extreme temperature limits.

We’d like to thank all the presenters at Semi-Therm TTW 2022 for their fascinating presentations this year!

AVRO-2D SOSA ALIGNED VPX Chassis at 2022 CANSEC, Global Defence & Security Trade Show 2022

June 2022

STL was excited to be an exhibitor in CADSI’s 2022 CANSEC event in Ottawa. As this marked the return of CANSEC in a post-pandemic world, we saw re-invigoration in this year’s participants. Much of that, we’re guessing, can be attributed to real person-to-person interaction. We can say for certain that while masks were still the norm, one could notice and sense the smiles on most faces behind the fabric during discussions. In addition to the live event, STL was proud to showcase a physical product – the first of many – in the form of our 2-slot, SOSA aligned VPX chassis system: the AVRO 2D. It was an excellent opportunity to exhibit our well-crafted unit on the J-Squared booth, as part of an ongoing partnership with them, in providing high-performing technology offerings. We’d like to thank everyone who attended, as well as our partners at J-Squared, for a very successful show. It was a great feeling to make real connections again!
